In the 39th Street Gallery:

TRADE: An Art Exhibition Based on Exchange Portfolios

Featuring Joan Belmar, Serena Perrone, Debra Ruzinsky, Justin Strom, Jon Swindler, Laura G. Thorne, Novie Trump, and Tom Wolff.

TRADE is exchange; it means “commerce” and “profession.” The exhibition TRADE at the 39th Street Gallery intends to be all of those things. Based on the concept of an exchange portfolio and curated by Phil Davis, TRADE brings together eight artists who each created a new edition of 12 artworks. Each artist will receive one work from each of the other artists, thus becoming one another’s collectors and inevitably also one another’s promoters. The remaining four works in each edition are available for sale – all at the same price of $250.

It’s a rare opportunity to collect work by established artists at such an affordable level. Proceeds go directly to the artists and also benefit the Gateway CDC, which in turn supports arts programming in the 39th Street Gallery works toward developing the Gateway Arts District.

In the Corridor Exhibition Space:

HELLO: Mosaics by Liza Linder

“I’ve never really gotten over the fact that my husband and I put our bodies together and made two people. INCREDIBLE.” – Liza Linder

This installation tells the story of that process for the artist. From the beginning of their relationship she left branches of forsythia on her now husband’s windshield as a way of calling attention to herself and a way of saying “Hello.”

This is the artists way of giving thanks to Cilia, Progesterone and Chromosomes.

And though the artists story continues to change and move through time, the act of mosaic-making sets her experiences in stone, well in glass, anyway. In this way, the story becomes concrete. It stops moving and becomes a place of stillness … a place of contemplation.

“Big Ideas” Opens at the GAC@B

Saturday, May 7, 5:00-8:00 pm

Opening Reception for:

"Big Ideas" at the Brentwood Arts Exchange

Big Ideas celebrates the beginning of the Brentwood Arts Exchange and Gateway Arts Center’s second year of operation with an exhibition by Sondra N. Arkin, Susan Finsen and Ellyn Weiss.  Featuring a collaborative site-specific installation, Big Ideas engages as it aims to survey and embody a collective mindset within the Gateway Arts District.

"Big Ideas" at the Brentwood Arts ExchangeThree sides of the gallery feature new, large-scale paintings created specifically for the exhibition by Arkin and Finsen.  On the fourth side Weiss has created a mural-sized mixed media drawing.  All of these artists’ works are designed to visually interact and complement the group’s collaborative installation Community Spirit, a site-specific work that commands the gallery in a way never before seen at the Brentwood Arts Exchange.

Community Spirit has been assembled on-site from dozens of hand-made elements – evocative of industrial detritus and recycled machinery – taking form in response to the gallery space as well as the art works that surround it.  The installation incorporates an interactive element where gallery visitors can add their thoughts and ideas about their own futures.  As its form develops through that participation, Community Spirit will slowly evolve into a snapshot of our shared experience.

Exhibition continues April 26 – June 11, 2011

Free and open to the public.

Alternative Life
By San Francisco based Textile Artist Jeremy Chase Sanders

"Alternative Life" 2010, detail, hand woven cotton, pigmented ink on cotton. 24"x24"

The type of synesthesia that artist Jeremy Chase Sanders experiences causes him to see a particular color associated with every number and letter of the alphabet (ie ‘2’ is red, ‘E’ is green).  He dyes threads to match the colors he sees in language and weaves cloth with coded text.  By imbuing cloth with coded meaning and fashioning it into particular patterns and forms, he examines the words we share and the intricate political hierarchies at play within our language.

Jeremy Chase Sanders moved from Baltimore to San Francisco in the late 1990’s where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute, and a Master of Fine Arts in Textiles from California College of Arts & Crafts.

Also, showing in our Corridor Exhibition Space will be members of the Hyattsville Community Arts Alliance.

So, if you don’t make it to the opening on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon would be a great time to see these shows in all three galleries at the Gateway Arts Center.  Specific gallery hours are in the right-hand column – from 12:00-4:00pm on Saturday all three will be open.

All Mixed Up:
A Juried Exhibition of Mixed Media Work

Opening Reception: Thursday, November 4 — 6:00-9:00 pm
Exhibition continues through  November 27

All Mixed UpHosted at the Brentwood Arts Exchange for the first time, the 2010 Prince George’s County Annual Juried Exhibition, All Mixed Up, is a prominent showcase for artists living, working, and studying in Prince George’s County.  Juried by Philippa Hughes, perhaps the Washington area’s most energetic art advocate and collector, this year’s exhibition features Melissa Burley, Nancy Donnelly, Angelina Hein, Tom Hill, Katie Dell Kaufman, Judith Kornett, Allen Linder, Megan Mueller, John Paradiso, Tim Tate, Erwin Timmers, Linda Lee Uphoff and Steven Williams.

“Dynamic, layered, textured and a little weird.”  The juror uses these words describe herself as much as the works in All Mixed Up.  The words also come together as a surprisingly succinct way to sum up the Zeitgeist of contemporary art.  The title “All Mixed Up” proceeds to take on its own layers of meaning.  As it traverses from installation to abstraction, provocation to beauty, the show strikes a chord at the heart of what makes contemporary art so exciting.

Elizabeth Gilbert on nurturing creativity

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses – and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person “being” a genius, all of us “have” a genius.  It’s a funny, personal and surprisingly moving talk.

This 20 minute talk will be shown every half hour from 7:00 – 9:00 pm during the Brentwood Arts Exchange All Mixed Up opening reception.  Come upstairs and get inspired!

Gallery Sitting Friday & Saturday

If you missed the Tom Wolff reception at the 39th Street Gallery (or didn’t, but would like to have another, perhaps more leisurely, look at the show) I’ll have the Gallery open on Friday the 24th, 7:00-9:00 pm, and Saturday the 25th, 12:00-4:00 pm.

You can see CENSUS: A Photographic Survey, Tom Wolff‘s portraits of business owners, staff and artists of the Gateway Arts District:

And you’ll be able to see the artworks of 10 area artists in the Corridor Exhibition Space:

The Brentwood Arts Exchange, where you can see the show Cultural Crossroads: Voices from Latin America and The Caribbean, will also be open during most of those hours (until 8:00 pm on Friday and 6:00 pm on Saturday):

And, of course, I’m always happy to show my own studio to visitors.

(The 39th Street Gallery will be open from 7:00-9:00 pm on Thursday, too, but with another “sitter.”)

Maryland Arts Council at the GAC@B

The Maryland Arts Council had a gathering at the Gateway Arts Center @ Brentwood on Friday, beginning with a meet-and-greet in the Brentwood Arts Exchange.  In attendance were Arts Council members from all over the state of Maryland as well as county and state politicians.  The board and staff of the Gateway CDC were represented, a number of local artists (including several of us residents) attended and, of course, the Brentwood Arts Exchange managers and staff were there.

The meet-and-greet took place amidst the newly installed show “Cultural Crossroads: Voices from Latin America and The Caribbean.”

Then the group went up to the second floor to see the Tom Wolff photography show in the 39th Street Gallery and many of the studios.

The Arts Exchange and the 39th Street Gallery have opening receptions on Saturday, October 17, from 5:00-8:00 pm.  [See previous post for more details.]  These are two outstanding shows.  If you miss the opening receptions check the right column of this blog for the galleries’ hours.
